Brazilian Lorena Viezel Leads Flamengo to Fourth Victory in Superliga
Brazilian national team middle blocker Lorena Viezel delivered an exceptional performance on Tuesday, helping her team, SESC RJ Flamengo, extend their winning streak to four matches in Brazil’s Women’s Superliga. Viezel tallied 13 points, including six blocks, as Flamengo defeated defending champions Gerdau Minas 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23) in their first match at the iconic Maracanãzinho stadium.
Lorena Viezel’s Dominance in Flamengo’s 3-1 Victory
Lorena Viezel, one of the key signings for the 2024-2025 season, was instrumental in Flamengo’s victory. The 25-year-old middle blocker’s all-around performance was recognized as the best on the court. She contributed five kills, two aces, and a match-high six blocks, showcasing her skills on both offense and defense. Her presence at the net proved critical in slowing down Minas’ top player, Thaisa Menezes, who only managed seven points during the match.
Flamengo Extends Winning Streak in Superliga Behind Lorena Viezel’s Performance
“This victory crowns a very special moment for our team,” said Lorena Viezel. “We prepared really well for this match and were able to do exactly what we planned. Blocking was very important today, and we believe it can make the difference for us moving forward.” The match saw a strong contribution from other Flamengo players as well, with Edinara Brancher leading all scorers with 18 points, and Michelle Marinho (11) and Karina Souza (10) also reaching double digits.
Minas’ Struggles Against Flamengo’s Strong Defense
Gerdau Minas, the defending champions, struggled against Flamengo’s formidable defense. Despite a strong showing from Kisy Nascimento (17 points) and Yonkaira Peña (13 points), Minas couldn’t find the rhythm to challenge Flamengo’s strong blocking and attack. Team leader Thaisa Menezes expressed disappointment after the match, saying, “We prepared to do one thing on the court and did the opposite. We need to understand what went wrong and learn from it.”
Flamengo Moves Up to Second Place in Superliga Standings
Flamengo’s victory propelled them to second place in the Superliga standings, with 15 points from five wins and one loss. They are tied with league leaders Dentil Praia Clube but trail in tie-breakers. Minas remain in fourth place with 11 points.
With both teams back on the court soon, Flamengo will face Fluminense in a state derby on Friday, while Minas will travel to play Flor de Ypê Paulistano Barueri on Saturday.
