Golden Boy Promotions has opposed Ryan Garcia’s exhibition bout in Japan on December 30. Garcia, who is under a doping suspension, had planned to face Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo, but Golden Boy, which holds exclusive rights to his fights, has not approved the event.
Garcia’s Suspension and Doping Controversy
Garcia is currently serving a suspension in the United States due to multiple failed drug tests before his April 2023 victory over Devin Haney, which was subsequently overturned to a no-contest. The New York State Athletic Commission imposed a one-year ban on Garcia, which is set to last until April 2025. As part of his return to competition, Garcia must provide a clean urine test to have his licence reissued.
Golden Boy’s Official Stance on Garcia’s Fight
Oscar de la Hoya, founder of Golden Boy Promotions, expressed his opposition to the exhibition fight, stating that his company holds “exclusive rights” to any Garcia fights. He further revealed that the organisers of the proposed exhibition event had acknowledged this and agreed in writing that Golden Boy’s sign-off was required for the bout to take place. However, no such approval has been granted, making the event unconfirmed as of now.
Garcia’s Explanation for the Exhibition Bout
During the news conference, Garcia explained that the exhibition fight with Anpo was the “only option to stay active” during his suspension. Garcia acknowledged that taking months off from the sport would hinder his development, so he opted for the exhibition to stay in shape and continue training. “This is my only route, so I found a way,” Garcia said. He also noted that the exhibition would consist of no more than eight rounds of two minutes each, with no official winner announced.
What’s Next for Ryan Garcia?
Although the exhibition bout with Anpo is uncertain, Garcia’s focus remains on staying in shape and preparing for a bigger fight in April 2025. As he works through his suspension, Garcia is eager to get back into the ring after a long break and regain his momentum.
