Marcus Buchecha Returns at ONE 169 with Free Agency on the Horizon
After a 15-month layoff, Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Marcus Buchecha is set to re-enter the ring at ONE 169 in Bangkok. The bout, a high-stakes clash against Amir Aliakbari, could potentially set Buchecha up for a shot at the heavyweight title. However, this match also marks the end of Buchecha’s current contract with ONE Championship, opening the door to free agency after the event.
Speaking to MMA Fighting, Buchecha acknowledged that the outcome of his fight against Aliakbari might impact his career trajectory, possibly placing him in line for a heavyweight title shot. Still, he remains focused on using the fight as leverage for any future negotiations. “This fight will give me leverage,” he noted, “So I’ll focus 100 percent on this fight and then discuss better terms.”
Buchecha’s Long-Awaited Return to the Ring
Buchecha has been out of competition since his loss to “Reug Reug” Oumar Kane in August 2023. Although the wait was lengthy, Buchecha stayed dedicated to training and improving his skills. “It obviously wasn’t my decision [to stay out for over a year] but I was in the gym, training and evolving,” he said, emphasizing his growth in wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and other aspects of MMA.
Reflecting on the time since his last match, Buchecha expressed gratitude for the training period, admitting he feels like a more developed fighter. “The actual fight [with Kane] was a great experience,” Buchecha said. “It added a lot to my career as an MMA athlete. I learned a lot about a Buchecha I didn’t know.”
The Clash with Amir Aliakbari
Buchecha’s upcoming fight with Aliakbari presents a formidable challenge. With a Greco-Roman wrestling background and a four-fight winning streak, Aliakbari is a heavyweight contender in his own right. Buchecha is prepared for whatever approach his opponent takes, whether it’s on the ground or in a stand-up battle. “He has heavy hands, but his background is in wrestling,” Buchecha said. “If the fight goes to the ground, I’m ready. If it stays on the feet, I’m ready.”
For Buchecha, securing a win against Aliakbari would be the ideal way to enter free agency. He recognizes the importance of finishing strong and has his sights set on a positive outcome to leverage his next career steps.
What’s Next for Buchecha?
As Buchecha approaches the end of his contract, he remains focused on Friday’s fight. “I hope to talk to you again on Saturday and definitely talk about the future,” he told MMA Fighting. “But my goal right now is Friday.”
Fans are eagerly anticipating his potential future as he eyes free agency for the first time in his professional MMA career. Will Buchecha re-sign with ONE Championship, or could we see him explore new opportunities in MMA? Only time will tell.
