Goalkeeper Alisson Becker has called on his Liverpool teammates to focus on “creating our own history” as they pursue the Premier League title in their first season under new manager Arne Slot.
The Reds currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal.
Reflecting on Past Achievements
Brazil international Alisson was an integral part of the Liverpool squad that ended the club’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title by winning the Premier League in the 2019-20 season under former manager Jürgen Klopp. Reflecting on that historic triumph, Alisson said:
“That team was really special. We achieved great things. It was the first Premier League title in a long, long time. We also won the Champions League together the season before.”
However, the 31-year-old emphasized the need to focus on the present:
“There is no comparison with both situations. What makes me happy is this group of players – we have the quality to do something special. The most important thing is the commitment that is needed to win something is there.”
A Blend of Experience and New Talent
Alisson is one of nine players from the current Liverpool squad who were part of the title-winning team in 2019-20. The others include Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Mohamed Salah.
Meanwhile, the team has undergone significant changes, with fresh additions like Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo bolstering the squad.
Tactical Evolution Under Arne Slot
Dutch manager Arne Slot, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord in the summer, has brought a more measured tactical approach to the team. Alisson noted the shift in playing style compared to Klopp’s tenure:
“I don’t think it is too similar [to our style under Klopp]. A few players still play in the team but we have a little bit [of a] different style, more ball possession. Before it was really straightforward, a lot of transition, a lot of intensity.”
Slot’s tactical adjustments have helped Liverpool maintain their lead at the top of the table. The team heads to West Ham this Sunday with the opportunity to further extend their advantage.
Looking Ahead
Alisson remains optimistic about the team’s prospects this season, urging his teammates to focus on the present rather than drawing comparisons with the past:
“We don’t have to compare ourselves with the teams in the past. We have to create our own history this season, this group.”
