Bernhard Langer defied age and expectations to clinch victory at the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The 67-year-old German golfer shot a five-under-par 66, securing a one-stroke win at Phoenix Country Club. With this victory, Langer extended his incredible streak of winning at least one title every year on the PGA Tour Champions circuit for 18 consecutive years.
Langer’s Historic Victory at the Charles Schwab Cup
Langer’s triumph was nothing short of remarkable. His 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole helped him finish at 18 under par, just ahead of defending champion Steven Alker and Richard Green, both finishing at 17 under. Langer’s victory is his 47th on the Champions Tour, further cementing his legacy as one of the most successful players in the history of the tour.
A Dramatic Finish to a Record-Breaking Season
Langer, a two-time Masters winner, faced adversity during the round. After starting with a five-shot lead, he hit back-to-back bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, narrowing his advantage. A bogey on the 17th hole, combined with Alker’s birdie, set up a dramatic final hole where the pair were tied.
On the par-5 18th, Langer found himself driving into the trees but managed to make a brilliant birdie. Alker, despite an impressive round, could only make par, giving Langer the victory.
Despite his disappointment at not winning the championship, Alker’s second-place finish was enough to capture the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race, beating Ernie Els for the title.
Langer, reflecting on his remarkable achievement, said, “It’s unbelievable. To win this big tournament after what I’ve been through and to make it 18 years in a row out here, it’s quite amazing. I’m very grateful, very blessed.”
