World number one Scottie Scheffler will miss the opening two weeks of the 2025 PGA Tour season following surgery for a hand injury sustained while cooking Christmas dinner.
Details of the Injury
The 28-year-old American withdrew from the season’s first tournament, The Sentry, set to take place next week in Hawaii. Scheffler is also expected to sit out the Sony Open before returning at The American Express Championship in California, scheduled from 16-19 January.
In a statement released on Friday, Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, explained the incident:
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”
An Eventful 2024 Season
Scheffler, recently named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, had an extraordinary 2024 campaign:
- Nine Titles: Seven victories on the main PGA Tour, including repeat wins at the Players Championship and The Masters.
- Olympic Gold: Captured the gold medal in Paris.
- FedEx Cup Victory: Secured his first FedEx Cup with a win at the Tour Championship.
- Memorable Moments: Warmed up for the second round of the US PGA Championship in a jail cell after being arrested on his way into Valhalla Golf Club.
Scheffler’s absence will undoubtedly be felt in the early weeks of the season, but fans can look forward to his return at The American Express.
