Russian Advances and Biden’s Decision on Weaponry
Russian gains in Ukraine have surged in 2024, with Moscow reclaiming nearly six times more territory compared to 2023, according to data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The advances coincide with President Biden’s decision to provide Ukraine with anti-personnel mines and allow long-range missile strikes on Russian soil.
Moscow’s forces have reclaimed 2,700 sq km this year, targeting logistical hubs like Kupiansk and Kurakhove in eastern Ukraine. Despite their significant losses, Russia’s territorial push has gained momentum in recent months, raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to hold the eastern front.
Eastern Ukraine Under Pressure
In areas like Kupiansk and Vuhledar, Russian advances are placing immense strain on Ukrainian defenses. Key supply routes and residential areas have been heavily targeted, with verified footage showing severe destruction.
Experts warn that continued Russian advances could collapse Ukraine’s eastern defensive line. Dr. Marina Miron of King’s College London suggested the pace of Russian advances could create a “strategic catastrophe” for Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Kursk Incursion Falters
Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region initially served as a morale boost and demonstrated Kyiv’s tactical ingenuity. However, the offensive has since faced setbacks. Moscow’s counter-attacks have reclaimed nearly half the territory Ukraine initially gained.
While the operation aimed to divert Russian forces from the Donbas, reinforcements for Kursk largely came from less active fronts like Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. This has left Ukraine’s eastern front vulnerable while tying down some of its most capable units in Kursk.
The Role of U.S. Support Amid Leadership Changes
President Biden’s approval of new weaponry for Ukraine underscores U.S. commitment, but uncertainty looms with President-elect Donald Trump’s imminent administration. Trump has vowed to end the conflict but has not detailed his plans, sparking fears of reduced military aid for Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that such cuts could jeopardize the nation’s ability to defend itself, stating, “I think we will lose [the war]” without continued U.S. support.
A Shifting Battlefield and Future Negotiations
As Russia secures more territory, experts believe Moscow is strengthening its position for potential negotiations. Dr. Miron noted that battlefield outcomes could dictate the terms of any peace talks, giving Russia the upper hand.
Despite the challenges, Ukraine remains determined to counter Russian advances while leveraging new weapons to hold strategic positions. However, with both sides vying for control over key areas, the conflict shows no signs of abating.
