The UN says Israeli attacks on Gaza healthcare have pushed hospitals to the brink of collapse, causing a humanitarian crisis and raising concerns about war crimes.
UN Report Highlights
Between October 2023 and June 2024, at least 136 strikes targeted 27 out of 38 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities in Gaza. These attacks resulted in substantial damage, reducing hospital bed availability by 80% and claiming the lives of over 500 medical professionals.
The report also documented cases of newborns and trauma patients unable to access critical care due to destroyed infrastructure and disrupted medical services. Women faced higher risks during childbirth, with minimal prenatal and postnatal care available.
Israeli and UN Perspectives
Israel has defended its actions, stating that hospitals were being used by Palestinian armed groups for military purposes, including as command centers. The UN, however, has noted insufficient evidence to substantiate these claims and called for independent investigations.
The Israeli government also claimed measures were taken to mitigate harm, including providing evacuation routes, medical aid, and fuel to maintain hospital operations. The UN emphasized the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law, which protects medical facilities and personnel during conflict.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
High Commissioner Volker Türk highlighted the dire conditions, stating that hospitals should serve as sanctuaries, not death traps. He called on all parties to respect the principles of distinction and proportionality to protect civilians and medical infrastructure.
The collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system underscores the urgent need for international intervention to ensure access to medical care and uphold humanitarian standards.
