A prison boss has been killed in a car blast in Ukraine, marking another targeted attack on pro-Kremlin figures. Sergei Yevsyukov, the former chief of Olenivka Prison in Russian-occupied Donetsk, was killed when an explosive device detonated under his vehicle.
Authorities reported that the explosive device, equivalent to 100g of TNT, was planted under his vehicle. The blast also severely injured his wife, who is in critical condition. This incident highlights the persistent threats to Moscow-appointed officials in occupied Ukrainian territories.
Details of the Attack
Yevsyukov, 49, was a controversial figure due to his role as chief of Olenivka Prison, where dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war perished during a missile strike in July 2022. Russia accused Ukraine of targeting the facility, while Ukraine alleged that Russia destroyed evidence of torture and war crimes.
On Monday, Russian authorities launched a criminal investigation, confirming injuries to two local residents but withholding identities.
Footage from the scene shows Yevsyukov’s burned SUV in central Donetsk. This attack follows a pattern of assassinations targeting Russian officials.
