Raducanu and Boulter put GB into BJK Cup quarter-finals with dominant performances, as Emma Raducanu made a winning return from injury, followed by Katie Boulter’s commanding victory. Their combined efforts secured Great Britain’s place in the Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals in Malaga.
Raducanu, playing her first match in nearly two months due to a foot injury, claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Germany’s Jule Niemeier. It was a tense finish for the 22-year-old, who clinched her victory on the sixth match point after a series of near-misses. Despite the long break from the game, Raducanu was physically and emotionally calm, acknowledging the pressure to perform for her team. “You’re not just playing for yourself, you’re playing for everyone,” Raducanu said after her win.
Boulter Clinches Victory to Seal GB’s Progress
Later on Friday, Katie Boulter, fresh from her top-25 breakthrough, dominated Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-2, sealing the win for Great Britain. The victory meant that the team progressed to the quarter-finals without needing a doubles match, a solid performance from the squad.
Boulter, who recently made it to the final in Hong Kong, was pleased with her confident play. “Going in 1-0 up feels great; it helps me swing free,” she said. Boulter’s dominant victory highlighted Britain’s strength in the competition, with two top-level singles players on the roster.
Raducanu’s Road to Victory
Since her US Open win in 2021, Raducanu has often been at the center of attention, and her return in Spain sparked questions about her fitness. Having undergone wrist and ankle surgeries, she hadn’t played since late September. But Raducanu quickly found her rhythm, serving impressively with seven aces, including four to recover from a 0-40 deficit in the first set.
Raducanu’s serve and mental fortitude were key in her win, even though she struggled with match points in the final stages. She finally sealed the victory after a tense stretch, reflecting on the challenges of her comeback.
Britain’s Strength in the BJK Cup
With both Raducanu and Boulter available, Britain has one of the strongest squads in the tournament. The pair led Britain to victory in April’s qualifying match against France and have continued to deliver in Malaga. Now, Great Britain will face defending champions Canada in the quarter-finals on Sunday, aiming for their first-ever Billie Jean King Cup title.
