Mark Allen, Northern Ireland’s world number five, delivered a thrilling 4-3 victory against England’s Jack Lisowski to secure his place in the Scottish Open quarter-finals in Edinburgh. The tightly contested match saw Allen twice come from behind, sealing the final-frame decider with an impressive break of 68.
Allen’s next opponent will be Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham, who defeated Ali Carter 4-2 to advance. Lisowski initially led the match with a strong break of 106 in the opening frame, but Allen equalized with a break of 78. The Englishman regained the lead, but a stunning 112 from Allen leveled the score at 2-2.
Taking the lead for the first time at 3-2, Allen seemed poised to close the match, only for Lisowski to fire back with an 80 break. However, Allen ultimately triumphed in the seventh frame, repeating his recent success against Lisowski in the UK Championship quarter-finals.
Brecel and Xiao Shine in Edinburgh
Elsewhere, 2023 world champion Luca Brecel outlasted Ding Junhui 4-3 in another dramatic match. Despite Ding’s two-century breaks, Brecel showcased resilience to secure his spot in the last eight.
China’s Xiao Guodong also impressed, producing four breaks over 80 to defeat Stephen Maguire 4-1. With Maguire’s loss, hopes of a Scottish player lifting the Stephen Hendry Trophy were extinguished.
