British number one Jack Draper is officially out of the season-opening event in Australia due to a hip injury. Draper, who had a breakout 2024 season, confirmed his withdrawal from the United Cup and Davis Cup to focus on rehabilitation ahead of the Australian Open.
Injury Update and Future Plans
Draper, who canceled a training camp with Carlos Alcaraz in Spain this week due to a “niggle,” is optimistic about competing at the Australian Open, which begins on 12 January. Speaking on social media, Draper stated:
“As I work to get on top of my hip injury and get match fit, I have unfortunately been advised not to play in the United Cup. While we are very positive about competing in the Australian Open this year, I know I won’t be able to jump straight into a packed schedule as I manage and strengthen my hip.”
Breakout 2024 Season
Draper had a stellar 2024 season, winning ATP titles in Stuttgart and Vienna and reaching the semi-finals of the US Open. These achievements helped him break into the world’s top 15, solidifying his place as Britain’s top-ranked player.
Team Great Britain Adjustments
With Draper unavailable for the United Cup, Great Britain faces changes in their lineup. Rising star Jacob Fearnley, currently ranked world number 99, may step in. Additionally, Cameron Norrie, ranked 49th, could return to the squad after missing recent events.
Draper has also opted out of the Davis Cup tie against Japan in late January. This decision aims to ensure proper rehabilitation after the Australian Open. Captain Leon Smith supported Draper’s choice, prioritizing long-term health over immediate participation.
Focus on Australian Open
Draper plans to fly to Melbourne at the end of December and will not compete in any lead-up tournaments. Despite his withdrawal from the season-opening events, Draper remains committed to performing at his best during the Australian Open, where he hopes to build on his recent success.
