Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from this week’s ASB Classic in Auckland due to a back problem. The 22-year-old was set to face Robin Montgomery in the first round but will now head to Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Open, starting on 12 January.
Back Issue Halts Auckland Campaign
Raducanu expressed disappointment over her withdrawal, saying: “I love Auckland and the fans here, but unfortunately I picked up a back niggle and won’t be ready in time.”
The 2021 US Open champion has been struggling with injuries. A sprained foot ligament in September limited her to just three matches last season, all victories at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. However, she enters the Australian Open with no recent match practice.
Focus on Fitness for the 2024 Season
Raducanu has taken steps to improve her fitness by hiring renowned trainer Yutaka Nakamura. Speaking about this decision, she said: “I needed a more tailored approach and someone dedicated to me alone as an individual.”
This collaborative approach with her fitness trainer and coach Nick Cavaday is already showing benefits. “We can see things transferring onto the tennis court that we do in the gym,” she added.
Despite fewer injury setbacks last year, Raducanu missed several key tournaments, including the Miami Open, and only played 10 matches after Wimbledon.
Unseeded at the Australian Open
Ranked 56th in the world, Raducanu will not be seeded for the Australian Open. However, her focus remains on regaining her form and competing at the highest level.
